I wanted to start a thread on this so that it is easy to access if there are any questions about the differences between the 3 and what parts match and which do not. From what I have learned these are some of the differences and correct me if I am wrong.

Swing arms
-Bolt up on all 3 models
-S and E models do not have a chain guide like the SM models do
-SM has different caliper mounting than S & E

Subframe
-S & SM models are the same (have mounts for fender/racks and are longer)
-E model is like the S & SM but shorter (no mounts for fender/rack)
-All 3 will bolt up to any 400 frame

Rear Brake lever
-S & SM Models have a tab for a brake switch
-E Models have no tab for a brake switch
-All 3 will bolt to any 400 frame

Engine
-E models
-12.2:1 Compression
-Stage 2 cams
-Larger Carb
-S & SM
-11.3:1
-Stock Cams
-Smaller Carb

Suspention
-SM has different size triple clamps, larger inverted forks, stiffer rear spring
-S & E have same size triple clamps, smaller forks, softer rear spring

This is all I can think of right now and need to get going so correct me if I am worng and please ad any other info you know.

Not all E models have the FCR carb. Someone else will chime in but at some point they quit selling the E with the FCR...

Also the E rear caliper will not work on the SM swingarm. The rear calipers have specific mounts on the swingarm and the E mounts differently than the SM.

Cool we will see what we can come up with. Original post will probably be edited many times.

there are 50 state E models and 49 state E models. 04-07 california E models are 50 state. 00-06 the rest of the country got 49 state E models. california had 49 state E models 00-03. 07 was the last production year for the E in the US and they were all 50 state.

49 state E models have E cams (maked A/B) ,not stage 2.
49 state E models have the fcr carb and single layer base gasket (.010") and 10,500 rpm rev limit.

50 state E,S and SM have the 36mm mikuni bsr carb, milder cams (marked D/E) and 3 layer base gasket (.030") and 10,000 rpm rev limit.

there are more differences and changes thru the model years.
