What is the factory gear ratio(s) on an 05 KTM smc? I just recently took one in on trade for a deal I could not say no to. But the bike was previously owned by an older gentlemen whom strictly used the bike for highway use. I'm looking to mainly use the bike as a commuter in the Summer months here in Colorado. I come from a motocross back round ridding mostly 450cc classes in both RMXA and AMA, very recently converting one of my MX bikes to capitalize on some super moto tracks we have locally. I would love for the new SMC to have that kind of torque and power on tap, but I also understand that it is a very different bike by nature and not comparable to my RMZ 450. I'm just using that as an example. The new SMC currently has a 17 tooth primary gear and is running a 41 tooth secondary sprocket. Lets just say I was not impressed on my first ride... Given it was only about 40deg outside temps here in Co but the bike was at operating temps. My question is what would you seasoned guys or KTM experts run for gearing in order to make this bike a torque monster :hmmm: . Thanks in advance Jason (Supermoto NEWB)

17 front and 40 out back(2.35:1). For economies sake, providing your chain and rear sprocket are peachy keen, toss a 16 c/s sprocket on the front(2.50:1). 16/44(2.75:1) will probably more to your liking. 17/48(2.82:1)and 16/48(3.0:1) or 17/46(2.70:1) and 16/48(2.88:1) are good combos only needing to swap out the front sprocket for a gear change. Go to gearcommander.com and enter the info to see the differences.

A few pics on the new to me SMC. She looks good from far but it is far from good. The previous owner did the ole shake n shoot treatment on the plastics and looks like he prepped them with 60grit sand paper. Even the extra thick Krylon did not cover the wonderful prep job. Other then the plastics being painted the bike looks mainly stock to me other then the blinker delete mod on the tail light and eliminated the cores in the mufflers/cans. Bike needs a new front tire and a face lift ASAP. Looking to update the head light assembly, clean up the tail, and buy a full set of plastics in either white or black, and then start on the list of mods. Thank you for the answers on the gearing, much appreciated

I will try and locate some pics of my RMZ on the 17's, but I was able to find some in Moto-setup trim of both my 07 and my new 14.

My 07

paddled up with my old 09 RMX in the back round

Both bikes loaded up for a MX track day

And a few of my 14

And stock ish a few days after I bought it and eliminated the factory graphics and swapped the exhaust/engine covers/levers/and a few other items from my 09, compared to current look.

The orange plastics are cheap, whites take awhile to get here on a slow boat from Austria. Black's are probably just as slow, I got a black set from another member here. There is a tailtidy made for it, just another wait from Italy. If you need a set of OEM blinkers I may have a set if I haven't boxed them up. But the newer ones make the bike look mucho bueno. LEDs are almost a must, bulbs just vibrate to death, especially the rears.

Chip at Munn racing, in Texas. If you need the numbers they can be found on the KTM sites. Or I have them wrote down somewhere. At Munn Racing it will be required to pay, non-refundable, Chip is pretty good of letting you know of availability so not to get stuck with 3 out of 5 pieces. Up grading the headlight makes the HL shroud a non issue.
