Hey guys, I recently purchased an 05 CRF450X and it came with a 14/48 setup, I find it pushes fairly hard keeping around 60mph. I want to be able to ride 60 without running it dead but I do not want to gear to tall were I wont be able to have my fun *wink* *wink* What sprocket sizing is fair all around, I am looking for a nice balanced powerband, not just top end. Some guy mentioned he was running a 13/37 any input?

Let's amend this statement a little to read:
The bigger the countershaft sprocket the faster you go, and the smaller the rear sprocket the faster you go. Do both, like I did, a larger countershaft and a smaller rear and you'll be able to ge even faster.

I lost some low-end grunt but not as much as I was expecting, it still wheelies in 1st-3rd pretty easily, and the extra top end I got was well worth the trade-off .

Had 13/51 on mine stock and could barely keep up with 45mph traffic while over-revving. Switched to 14/42 and it will now run 65 to 70 steadily on the freeway without any issues and has been up to 95+ on highway twisties. Still wheelies pretty much at will up to 2nd gear and with some planning/momentum in 3rd. You will definitely need a new chain set-up, mine ended up being 110 links (including the masterlink). I wouldn't pre-cut the chain. Set it all up and run the chain loose over the sprockets. Measure TWICE (or even three times) how much length and where to cut it. Take my word, you DON'T want to cut it too short and have to buy another chain or press the links back on. Adjust chain, lubricate, ride your ass off while grinning insanely!

Right now i am running a 15/48 on my 06 450x and it cruises at 55 at like 5000-5500 with a bunch of pull off the bottom..not much clutch needed to get it going either. Its a pretty great all around setup for cruizin the streets as well as havin a little fun :D but im thinkin about goin to a 41 rear for a little bit "less stressful" high speed, long distance riding. Any one run this gearing or have any input? Good idea? Bad?

I now have 15/42 on my SM...it is a great street/highway gearing for anyone looking for an overall type of setup. I've heard of many people saying that you have to ride the clutch to get going with this size of a rear, but I really am not having much issue with it. It cruises really well at 55-60; its pretty damn good. If i couldve gotten a 43 rear i think it would have been the best personal combo for some one that will be cruisin for extended periods of time at 55+, but thats a pretty hard tooth size to find lol. Definately Happy with it tho!:clap:
