Recently it has become a known fact that there is a state that will allow you to mail in your information and they will mail you a plate along with a street legal title. I know that I have answered quite a few PM's concerning this question and up until recently I have been able to help some, but others, not so much. However, the information posted in this thread is quite the game changer! The state of South Dakota to getting our beloved sumo's legal in states that try to ruin the fun. For those of you who's DMV/Registration office determines a bike street legal status/ability by the VIN I'm not too sure how this would work, but if they go by the title...GAME ON! This information is coming straight from a member on here (who wishes to remain anonymous) who has successfully completed this process. Anybody else that has done this please post on here and either share your success story or give us a heads up on something to watch out for.

To get started, you will need to do the following:

https://www.state.sd.us/eforms/secure/eforms/E1792V1-FourWheelAllTerrainVehicleAffidavit.pdf

-you will need to fill out this form
-leave title number blank
-year, make, model
-put the name of who ever installed accessories to make the bike street legal (This can be your name)
-check all the boxes including 200cc (This is just confirming that the bike is 200cc or more)
-this form must be notarized, so don't sign it until you are in front of one

https://www.state.sd.us/eforms/secu...licationForMotorVehicleTitle&Registration.pdf

-fill out this form as well
-you will not need the date
-don't check any boxes in section I, section II, or section III
-fill in first box (your name)
-leave type of ownership and customer type blank
-identification# (needs to be your social security number)
-skip down and put in your address

section IV
-vin#
-put in make, model,
-body type- MC
-vehicle code- MC
-year and CC
-skip down to section V
-Just fill in purchase date

Don't need to put in anything else just sign and date the bottom

Besides these two forms, you'll need to send in the title or MSO and a copy of your driver's license. If the title isn't in your name you will have to call and find out what other forms you need (605)394-2163. You will also need to attach a note (preferably typed) that includes your name, email, phone number, and notate that you would like to pay by credit card over phone or internet and to contact you when they have a total price and are ready for payment.

Mail both forms, title/MSO, copy of Drivers license to:

Office of the Pennington County Treasurer
Pennington County courthouse
315 Saint Joseph St Suite 214
Rapid City SD 57701-2894

Additional Info.

Serial number is the same as the vin# (should be 17 characters long depending on year of bike) and you will need to send in the original title (they will be keeping your original title and sending you a new South Dakota title).

The fee is: $58.75 and a $3 credit card fee if applicable. You should receive your new title within 30 days.

note
Mlawler1 brought up a good point. Make sure to use your home address even though you're registering in S. Dakota. States only require that your bike is registered to you at your home address (so don't try and make a fake S. Dakota address). Use your address and your local police can't do anything because you're licensed and registered to your home address...just through a different state :D. Just make sure that the registration matches the information on your driver's license. (y)

Hey guys im trying to get my 2017 Husqvarna TE150 plated with this system, PA is pretty strict but no blinkers are needed & the amount of road riding will be extremely minimal just incase it gets dark & i need to shoot back to the truck. Will I have trouble since it NEEDS to be at least 200cc's? Could I say I put a 'big bore' kit and its now 200cc's? The title does say its 150cc's.

Also I only have the certificate of origin because the bike is financed I dont have the actual title in hand. What can I do about this?

Just an update on South Dakota for everybody - I sent my stuff out to Pennington County on Dec 15th, and had a license plate and registration in my mailbox on Dec 29th. They were super helpful and very fast! Now my YZ250 is street legal...which allows me to ride all sorts of trails next to my house legally...

any info on swapping SD title to PA?

Thanks to all who have posted info to legalize our bikes!

I received my sd title a week ago, went to my local tag & title place to transfer the title to PA and the clerk said Penndot would reject the title because it says 'off road' (she said it needs to read mc)

Has there been any pennsylvania members that have had this issue?

Should I just try another tags place?

Maybe send it back to SD to get the type changed?

I could just ride the sd plate but it would be the same issue if I try to sell it.

Thanks in advance

BTW it's an 89 RMX250

As Pinepig says, try a different DMV or the same one a month from now. Sooner or later you will hit the jackpot. I have noticed that at the end of the day, 4:45-4:50, things go pretty quickly and some stuff kinda gets overlooked. Friday at 4:58 they'll rubber stamp anything so they can be on their merry way, no confrontational dialog there. Good Luck.

I'd like to report success here in NY with this method. Thank you very much. However, I was required to also provide this form here:

https://www.state.sd.us/eforms/secure/eforms/E1737V1-ApplicantsTaxPaymentVerification.pdf

I sent my paperwork in on Friday 1/6/2017. I was contacted on 1/9/2017 and informed I need the additional MV-2007 form. I emailed a scan of the completed form on 1/10/2017 and I had my plate in my mailbox on 1/13/2017. Can't beat that!

Got my SD tag/title back in September with no problems, I've been concerned about rock'in an out of state plate although have had no issues so far.

Had to be @ the DMV for other business & thought "what the hell", $145 later and.......................

Now no worries about chickenshit LEO's, and as a bonus resale value just went up!

Title/address/forms

Floowing this thread for A WHILE. Found a buke i finally want to convert so Im going to try to do it out here in So Cal (Glendora). Couple quick questions...just bought the bike. Do i have to register it into my name first before I can start the process or can I just fill out the back of the CA title and send it to SD?
Second question, I know the address has changed, have any of the forms changed or have any of the links changed? Is it possible for someone to post up the new address so I dont have to endlessly search through the thread?
Thanks a bunch guys

To all you fellow riders in California; when buying a bike, make sure the previous owner doesn't get your real name/address or keep the report of new ownership part of the title.

If they do, and report the sale to CA, you'll be on the hook for registration fees, regardless of SD plates and registration.

Success in Maryland. SD received my paperwork exactly one week ago. Got plate in the mail today. Applied with bill of sale only...no title or mso...no problems
Was your bill of sale notorized? Did you have to do anything special of just the two forms and BOS? I sent out my request for title history a week ago and I'm waiting for the paperwork to return so I can send out the rest.

For the proof of taxes section on the title/tag affidavit, what do I put since I bought the bike in a private sale off cl?

Yz 450f

Signed up to MotoJunkie, to thank you all for the help and advice. It's all smiles from my end :D:D
Cost was $63.88 with a telephonic credit card payment. The lady also thanked me for getting my OR drivers license copy notarized. Only took 6 business days to get my plate in the mail.

What I learned and did on my '07 YZ450F.

Trail Tech Endurance II Speedometer: $80.00.
DOT Pirelli Tire Combo: $230.00 (Yes, they do sell a 19inch for the back)
Tusk Moto lighting kit with battery: $175.00 (No headlight)
Zeta Hand Guards with Turn Signal: $130.00
Polisport Headlight with solar charger: $315.00 (Bike will be in the sun during class and will hopefully keep the batteries topped up, super impressed with the LED brightness) Buy it on Amazon, cheaper and better warrantee.
Front sprocket 15 tooth and rear 46: $150.00 (Bike keeps a nice top speed but with little bottom end, great on the highway)

Total around:$ 1,100.00 But having the YZ on the streets, PRICELESS! Thanks all:thumbup:

Inspection

Okay quick question, the NY DMV website states, "All vehicles registered in New York State must get a safety inspection at a DMV-licensed inspection station". So.. if the bike is registered in the great state of South Dakota do I need A South Dakota inspection sticker? Will that come with the plates when you finish this process? If It doesn't can NYS ticket me, even though it isn't registered here? Im pretty confused lol.

P.S if anyone has any recommendations of a chinese dual sport under 2k I'd aprecciate it. I'm looking at the tekken, hawk, and apollo. all 250cc.

I live in NY. I'm also a NYS motor vehicle inspector. Those rules don't apply to you so long as the bike continues to be registered in SD. Run the SD plate and don't worry about an inspection sticker. However, if you transfer the registration back into NY at a later date you'll need to abide by our registration laws and have the bike inspected and display a sticker on your forks. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

Well i just did mine, I live in CA. It was really easy. My total cost was $66 I paid yesterday and they said the dropped the plates in the mail. I called them twice for some answers. They were very helpful. I wish the Republic of califonia was half as efficient and polite.

Thanks to who started the thread

Negative. You'd still need a title, or a notarized affidavit from the previous owner stating why there isn't a title.

It needs to be a valid reason. Different states have different loopholes, mostly for older bikes though. Think 15+ years old.

The off-road affidavit wouldn't be required.

this thread is for getting a TAG and TITLE for vehicles, if we listed every single state and county stipulation for atvs, sxs, dirtbikes, cars, trucks, horses and goats, it would be a never ending maze.

you can get a title and tag as outlined in the beginning of the thread. lights and stuff will vary according to where you use the vehicles. :)

Hey guys i just bought it 2010 yz450f
But the thing is the guy only gave me the certificate of origin from yamaha.but my concern is he got it ready signed the the mso and i don't know if i can get it street legal with Sd process..thanks
Title? If not go apply for one. That's the easiest way to do it so that everything is in your name and there's no discrepancy on who owns the bike. Other than your title, copy of drivers license and the two forms on this forums original post.

Hope this helps!
