Just bought a 05 DRZ SM super clean, its never been laid down but the bike is in for a suprise im about to scrape the tail light off of it-slow wheelies are just tooooo sweet on this thing. i've got some questions I hope you supermoto pros can give me some guideance, any advice is appreciated!

-Levers? ASV shorty clutch lever? I was going to just cut the brake lever, or who makes a shorty brake lever?

-Gearing? I see alot of talk about going -1 tooth on the front sprocket, I want to go -2, anyone running -2?

-Renthal Bars? Im not sold on completely sold on Renthal, what bars are most guys running? I understand that there are even alot of choices within Renthal with different heights of bars, angles of handles etc. My main concern is getting a bar that will install with no problems/modifications like throttle cable lengths, light and kill switches reinstallation, hand grips etc.

-Handbrake? Anyone running a handbrake? Whats gonna be the best/easiest set up? My Gixxers got a dual caliper setup but I suspect using the single stock caliper with the splitter on the line is going to be what you recommend/only setup possible?

-Tires? With intension to stunt on the horizon, what tires gonna last the longest with burnouts and lockin up back brakes in the lot? Something still going to handle good on the street(no twisties here in GrandCayman)

I have a 04 Gixxer 1000 that I stunt but Supermoto is new teritory for me, bike is soooo much fun to ride :D

Thanks for your help guys and clutch it up!
Pete.

For levers run teh new ASV super shortys if you aren't going to run handguards. They are awesome and you can get them SMALLLLL

-2 should be fine to ride with but watch that the sprocket doesn't get so small the chain rubs teh slider constantly. Better off going like -1 front +2-3 rear and keep stock chain length

I personally run renthal fatbars and LOVE them . They are the 1 1/8" bars and work great for stunting. I have laid mine down HARD learning circles and haven't twisted them yet. The other ones to check out are the protaper contours. For a bend get like a CR Hi, or KTM bend. They are pretty flat and stay out of the way when doing like seat stander to special K or high chair.

Call Fullthrottle Inc. They have a specific handbrake kit for the 400sm. I have a handbrake on my YZF426 and I love the thing. Mine, however is all custom stuff adapted to fit. The other thing to check is the new CABLE OPERATED sm setup from full throttle. If I wreck my front master thats what I am converting to.

For tires rock a Pilot Power front (only tire that is worth a damn for repeated street stoppies) and a Pirelli Diablo Strada rear. It is a SUPER long life tire that grips great. The added life isn't with a harder compound but because the tire is THICK. I run that setup on my stuntbikes and it's perfect. As a side note to how good the pilot power is on the front. I talked to Kane at stuntfest this past summer and he STILL runs a pilot power front even though he is sponsored by maxxis. He said that until they make a front he can trust he will always run a PP

DRZ stunt setup

Thanks raider! Your advice is awesome. This DRZ is so much fun, I cant wait to set up my handbrake! Im gonna check out this cable operated you mentioned, ive never even heard that shit b4...

Regarding the Renthal Bars, I was plainning on going with the 1 1/8 bars but want to make sure all of the controls, grips, throttle cables etc will fit with no trouble.

I've run PP in the front on my gixxer so had this tire in mind anyways, I always wanted to Run a Diablo, i'll try one on the rear of my DRZ as soon as I need a new shoe:D

Glad I could help. That new handbrake setup is SICK, I qould just be worried about grabbing the wrong one because I run mine pretty close together, lol.

The renthals will work perfectly for you. Just do A LOT of research on the bends you like and go to a dealership and feel them out. There are certain bends that give me arm pump like crazy when stunting. I am VERY particular about my bar bend.

PP are perfect tires in my opinion, front a rear, but if you are stunting money can't buy a better tire than the Diablo Strada. Just make sure that when you look for or order one that you get the Strada, it is the long life one. On the +10 F4i stuntbike I ran that tire for like 5000 miles of burnouts, wheelies, etc. On a motard its like double that.

One thing to watch with the levers is that some of the other brands that make "unbreakable" levers are made of some REALLY soft aluminum/alloys and the lever will actually bend. ARC's are bad for it. I have run all of them in the past and I try to stick with ASV. They actually have street bike stuff now so they will be blowing up in no time.

Feel free to ask anything else and I would be glad to help.

When you smash the tail light out, a trailer light works good and is only like $10. Just make sure you get one with a dual filament bulb. You can get them at any auto parts place. It can also be mounted closer to the fender so it's less likely to get smashed. They even look better than the stock one.

+3 on the PP front.

Fastbikesrule.... your plate looks a lot like mine, lol. I let mine hang vertically and whenever I hit a coaster I can hear it dragging all over. How soon does that rear fender/mudflap thing scrape? Seems like anything past balance point and it would scrape all over.

MI winter sucks... I rode for like 20 min. yesterday before it started to snow.... AND IT WAS SUNNY!

Stunt setup

love the trailer light routine, maybe i'll buy 2 or 3 at a time, scrape em' all off:D
What I should do is save the alba tail, throw on a trailer light and scrape with less harm$$ done... Not sure how much$$ the alba light is, came with bike...

For now im just going down to in the front for my gearing, what do you guys think?

Here is a few of my motard stunt piece. The rear fender has zip ties from scraping it and breaking the tail light off. Oh well, The new fender was cut today and the subframe is getting welded for a foot support plate!! Oh, and I am going to throw some paint on the rims for fun.... finished pics soon

Hey raider,

Handbrake setup looks sweet:thumbup: and im digging the custom rear stunt pegs:)

im planning on going -2 in on the front sprocket of my DRZ SM but i've hear some warnings of going too small in the front. DRZs come with 15 in the front so im going to a 13, what you think???

Pete.

Thanks, that handbrake is SOLID. 1 finger lock up no problem. Soon I will probably flip it as I get bad armpump riding seatstander coasters and when I do some transfers. I talked to guru from streetfighters at the Indy expo and he said to try that. Also I am adding a second, lower rear peg on the back because those are a tad high for staggered stuff.

I would be careful for sure. check what kind of clearance you have with the 15 because a 13 is way smaller and you don't want it to rub and wear through the slider/swingarm.

pilot power front- sticky
continental SM rear-last for a long time
if ya can get a sub frame with 12 in go fo it, makes mono heaps more fun
i put 13/52 gearing on, but was to slow on the top end, great for slow stuff, so i now have 15/52 it ok

Sorry for late response guys, works been killing me, barely get any sleep at night, after I ride for 3 hours

Yeah Raider, I order the 13 front sprocket first but you're the 4th person to tell me going down 2 is pushing it so I also ordered a 14(down1)

Pimp, I live in Cayman, I used to have a Gixxer in Miami so it was like my second home....(only an hour flight from Cayman to Miami)

Paro, thanks for the tail light offer but my DRZ SM I just bought has a pretty sweet alba tail light so im going to see if I can work a 12 bar around that, or just fuck it and scrape it off:D

Mxsam, that subframe with 12 bar is awesome!! With the Exhaust centred under the tail(or just the seat in your case)I want that setup!!! Reminds me of my Gixxer, it has a Scrapeworks subframe...

Guys, what about welding/bolting 12 bar to my stock subframe??? Anyone got any advice/setup photos?????

Holla back!
Pete.

Actually Powers Stunt Works makes a round bar for that bike. Are you looking for a square or round? I suggest the round because most people aren't doing ape hangers and shit on a motard. The round bar works perfect and after you scrape it good for a few days it will get a flat spot that is noticeable.

Let us know how the sprocket thing turns out....

Hopefully I will finish my custom subframe at some point, lol, just been so busy with work that busting out the welder is just not in the cards..

untill now ive had no trouble with the bike clearing the ground when laying it down
\

donw know how you guys can do circles all day, mine are so inconsistent, one minute i think im gettin them, then the next im flat out gettin 90 deg

dont know, im thinkig about puting the stock parts back on for a bit a racing motard, least racing gives you great bike control

Between my bark busters, sliders, and pegs my motor won't hit the ground.... weird. With circles that is the curse. I can go out one day and feel like I am the next Ed1000 but the next day I can barely get one. Thats why we are not professionals yet, lol. Keep trying. Thats like getting upset because you go to a track and can't run consistent lap times with Currie... takes time.

Either way it takes a TON of control to stunt, probably moreso than racing. Only because when done well you are always on that super fine line between a beautiful wheelie and being on your head. There is no halfass or slow pace in stunting (sometimes I wish there was) you just have to man up and do it. Maybe thats why I like it.... no one has any excuses

#21 ·
when i built the bike, i layed it in its side and the gear lever folded up, that will work....i was wrong

going to the track a doing consistent lap is what i can do, mx anyhow, so ive still got a lot to learn on the motard, only got this thing 7 months ago coming back from a knee recon

man up? i wish...got no one to ride with on the island and no places to ride, my stunt carpark is 12mx15m not big, and having no one to push me is hard to inprove too....

im building a crf50 stunt atm, so i think some racing motard and gettin back to the basic's on the fiddy should help

12 bar for DRZ SM

Hey raider,

I dont see anything on powers site for a DRZ 12 bar. I had a flat bar in mind if i had to build it myself but a round bar might be fun to scrape(never scraped a round bar before...)

Got any more info on if that round bars available from powers? photos?

Pete.
