I was thinking of cutting the front fender on my DRZ400. Anybody on here already do this? I wanted to see what it would look like before I started to cut it.
havent cut it myself, but seen a cut one and it didnt look bad as long as you can cut it even and file off the roughness. if that makes sense. but question, acerbis and cyrica both make shorter supermoto style fenders for almost any bike for like $30. why not go that route?
I don't have any pics but I cut mine up about a week after buying it off the showroom floor. I like seeing if I can make something before buying it. I just used blue painters tape to cover the area that would be cut off and it effectively gave me an idea of what would be left after I took the Dremel to it. I just messed around with patterns until I achieved the design that I wanted. Hacked it up, smoothed it out and been riding with it for over 3 years. You can buy one, but if you like to tinker, do it yourself and try it. If you screw it up, then just drop 30 bucks on another one.
I did both, bought an aftermarket, and cut it. I didn't like the beak on the Acerbis, so it had to go. The key is something low speed, high speed cutters like a dremel tool melt the plastic (which is fine if you account for it and feel like cleaning up the mess). What I did was use a large pair of side cutters to rough it out, followed by heavy duty kitchen shears to get real close, then file and sand with varying grits until smooth. Here's my result
Did my DRZ a few months ago. Super easy, file the edges down and sand smooth.
I like the looks of it, but I now understand the purpose of those enourmous ugly fenders... now when I ride in the rain, I have a constant spray being flung up from the front tire which ends up right on my goggles..... definately worth mentioning. It kind of sucks.
Plan on doing mine when I get off work today. I will post done pics.
