Each state is different; but for the most part, you need proof of insurance and inspection (from state you hope to obtain plates from) before you can apply for official registration. Most inspection stations are familiar with the process and \'should\' have the appropriate form.

\r\n I have a bike with a detailed buyers order (bill of sale) from a dealer showing sales tax along with other info. Im looking at this form https://www.state.sd.us/eforms/secur...gistration.pdf that i need in addition to the other forms in the OP. My question is what do i do in the middle part with the oath and the statement of facts? Do i fill in both? What do i write in the statement of facts? I just wanted to see what you guys had to say about it before I go and call them.\r\n

\r\n HAHA, I am so glad that I found this thread!!!
    \n
\nI followed the directions, completed all forms, and sent it all to the nice folks in South Dakota. I sent it priority mail from Florida on Friday, the following Tuesday I had an email to call and pay for my new registration and title ($57.00). The woman was very nice and told me my tag would leave the next day (and title will follow in 30 days), Tag/Registration was in my mailbox that Saturday...8 days start to finish!!

\r\n More California Success, It\'s key to get somebody at DMV that understands the nuances of the 7500 mile out of state transfer. Took me three tries at different DMVs to find a nice lady that knew her shit. The other two both wanted to see the federal secondary vin stickers that do not come on bikes originally built/sold as OHVs. Hell there is box to check for that very issue on the form they use and they wouldn\'t believe me that that\'s exactly what it was for.

I have a question I\'m hoping you can help me with. I\'m going to atttempt the transfer with a WR450F. I want to buy it in CA, get the SD plates, rack up 7500 miles or swap clusters, then transfer to CA.
    \r\n
\r\nMy question is did you buy your bike in California? I don\'t want to have my VIN already come up as a green sticker OHV because I bought it in Cali.\r\n

\r\nI bought mine in Oregon but it doesn\'t matter. You can start with a California bike and it works the same, once you plate it in another state it becomes an out of state bike. I have 3 friends that started with California bikes ( 2 wrs and a rmz ) and it worked for them\r\n

    \r\n ok SO......
\r\nhello all ive been reading through this forum for awile now and recently purchased a 2005 gasgas ec250. Now you can register these guys to be street legal the mso says body type: MOTORCYCLE and people have been doing it.... But i ran into some trouble, i purchsed it from the original owner but he never registered it in NH he used it as a trails bike and to cruise around on, so there is no title for the bike i was just given paperwork that says "certificate of origin" and the same guy who i bought it from his name is sighed in one of the places on the back side. so i called my local DMV in rhode island and asked if they will take an mso as a title when i register the bike they said no and the original owner would have to go register it get a title then transfer the title to me YEAh like thats going to happen.
    \r\n
\r\nso here is where the plot thickens , im thinking ok ill try the "register in south dakota method" because i have an mso so technically i can get a title and get it plated that way right? WELL i call the south dakota dmv simply to ask if i can use a mso from the original owner who sold it to me and use that to register the bike and suddenly this lady seemed to get very angry and wanted to know WHY i wanted to register it in south Dakota and WHY not my state and WHY do i need to do this and WILL i ever even go to south dakota i actually panicked and hung up because i didnt know what to say and i thought i was almost in trouble
    \r\n
\r\nSO is the DMV catching on? are they getting pissed we all keep doing this? it was almost as if she knew exactly what i was trying to do and at one point she even goes "ok well tell me this, is it even a road legal bike does the mso say off road use only" which it doesnt..... so what should i do now? call back a different office or should i be dine to just fill out all the paperwork, sign the back of the mso and mail it to them? i even have everything on the bike i need to make it street legal already ill upload pics soon

\r\n Ive been enjoying being able to trail hop on my XR4 thanks to a plate!
    \r\n
\r\nNow Im up to renew my registration. Anyone done it yet? If I go to do it online, it asks for my SD license #....
\r\nOther option the paperwork says is go in person.
\r\nSo, how did you do it? Is there a mail-in option? A different online option?
    \r\n

    \n
\nUPDATE: My son got his SD pink and headed off to CA DMV. He walked out with a CA plate! His bike does have the dreaded \'3\' too. They didn\'t dissect the vin, just verified it. He does have all the proper equipment on it and DOT tires.. which they didn\'t even check but probably did \'notice\'. Now it\'s my turn. I should be able to get down there in a week or so.
    \r\n \r\n
    \r\n
    \r\n
Just got back from DMV. Although I had success, and do have a CA license plate, it was not as easy as my son had it. Here\'s some of the things to know:
\n1. We both had to bring our bikes to DMV for vin verification. We both used our trucks to take them there, only when he went, the dmv girl just told him to read the numbers to her since she didn\'t want to jump into the truck. On mine, the guy made me take my bike out so he could verify the vin AND the engine number.
\n Lesson 1: Bring your ramps if you bring the bike in the truck.
\n2. Both DMV offices wanted to verify the CA emissions sticker. Once again, my son had it easy as they just asked him if it was on there. Mine, the guy inspected it HOWEVER, my bike was already loaded back into the truck so he viewed it from a couple feet away. I highly doubt he could actually read it from that distance. I read it to him.. and may have misplaced the words "EPA noise requirements" for "CA emissions requirements". I don\'t know.. I can\'t read very well.
\n Lesson 2. If you don\'t have that sticker, go make one. Take a picture of one, and print it/stick it to the bike.
\n3. My guy did verify that all the lights were there however didn\'t make me turn them on and he didn\'t check the tires for DOT marking. Mine are not DOT tires.
\n Lesson 3: Have all your stuff on there and working just in case you get hard-nose guy like mine.
\n4. Once back inside (after all this inspection) the desk girl told me I\'d have to "non op" my off-road registration renewal when it comes because I\'ll get both renewals now. I don\'t see where this is relevant since it will never again be registered as an off-road bike. That would be the time they would see that it is not paid up. I may non-op it if it\'s cheap enough just to avoid any future problems when I sell it.
\n5. DMV did ask me when I originally bought it, and made me pay sales tax on the amount. I told them I only paid $500 for the bike so it didn\'t cost me much. Be warned.
\n6. My DMV office asked me what the odometer was. I told them that the original odo was destroyed however the bike has a little over 12k miles. They didn\'t buy that. All they cared about was what it said right now. This matters because you can\'t register a vehicle as "used" in CA if it does not have at least 7500 miles. Mine doesn\'t.. hence the little white lie. This is why they wanted the emissions sticker. Had it met the 7500 mile mark, it shouldn\'t need the emissions sticker check.

\nThe take-a-way here is: it does work but be prepared to jump through a few hoops. BE NICE.. BE PATIENT

Just got back from DMV. Although I had success, and do have a CA license plate, it was not as easy as my son had it. Here\'s some of the things to know:
\r\n1. We both had to bring our bikes to DMV for vin verification. We both used our trucks to take them there, only when he went, the dmv girl just told him to read the numbers to her since she didn\'t want to jump into the truck. On mine, the guy made me take my bike out so he could verify the vin AND the engine number.
\r\n Lesson 1: Bring your ramps if you bring the bike in the truck.

I already asked this but I\'m hoping I can ask another fellow CA member, I have a question I\'m hoping you can help me with. I\'m going to attempt the transfer with a WR450F.

    \r\nWhat I learned and did on my \'07 YZ450F.
    \r\n
\r\nTrail Tech Endurance II Speedometer: $80.00.
\r\nDOT Pirelli Tire Combo: $230.00 (Yes, they do sell a 19inch for the back)
\r\nTusk Moto lighting kit with battery: $175.00 (No headlight)
\r\nZeta Hand Guards with Turn Signal: $130.00
\r\nPolisport Headlight with solar charger: $315.00 (Bike will be in the sun during class and will hopefully keep the batteries topped up, super impressed with the LED brightness) Buy it on Amazon, cheaper and better warrantee.
\r\nFront sprocket 15 tooth and rear 46: $150.00 (Bike keeps a nice top speed but with little bottom end, great on the highway)
    \r\n
\r\nTotal around:$ 1,100.00 But having the YZ on the streets, PRICELESS! Thanks all\r\n

\r\n Nobody is talking about the rest of the process unless you guys are just fully converting with headlights tai lights and blinkers, because if you get pulled over on dirtbike that has paper work cool, but you are getting a ticket for headlight twilight mirrors twilight and so forth what\'s one more ticket gonna hurt for riding off road on street
    \r\n
\r\nI have 400sm and have moved twilight tag mirrors and I still get a ton of shit when I get pulled over. I can only imagine getting pulled over on rmz450 and whipping out a paper that says its level with not blinkers mirrors and so forth, so my concern is if you aren\'t fully converting bike isn\'t it a waste of time. My rmz 450 is mainly for dirt but I have a set of street tires I ride on a lot so I don\'t burn up my knobbys
    \r\n
\r\nSo are most of you guys doing full conversions....?\r\n

    Start a new thread!
    \r\n
\r\n This one isn\'t about the right tires, lights, horn, or how every single state has different requirements, is about getting a street legal title.
    \r\n
\r\nIt is going to vary wildly from state to state year to year, cop to cop.
    \r\n
\r\nYou can have a wealth of info, but p put it in its own thread!\r\n

\r\n Sent in the 2 forms, the extra form found on page 16 and a Bill of Sale. They contacted me yesterday to arrange payment. Called them and paid, they mailed out my tags and registration today! She said the title would come later because it\'s sent from another office. This is so awesome!!!\r\n

\r\n Received all of my paperwork and a letter basically telling me to get the original owner to get the title transferred to the US and do the EPA and DOT bullshit like the tag office did here. Nothing ventured nothing gained. I painted it yellow to match one of my Yamaha RZ350s along with Yamaha logos, so that\'s the route I\'ll be going. I love smokers and this little 250 screams. The RZ is a baddass too. Building a Motard RZ with alloy tank and TZR Swingarm for starters. Should have pics soon.

Well if you want to rider in CA, you need to have a 250cc bike or bigger to ride on CA highways. Also, if you ride in CA with any other state plates, they will pull you over. You have 10 days in CA to register your bike and get a CA driver license, otherwise find room for all the tickets you\'ll get. You may ask, how does the CHP know I don\'t live in SD or how do they know how long you\'ve been in CA? Well, once they pull you over for any reason, they will ask for your CA license, CA insurance with an address matching your license and registration. If they all don\'t match, you get 3 tickets. Once they see a bike with any state plates, they will notify all CHP in the area and they\'ll eventually get you. Not sure what other states do but these guys don\'t mess around.

150cc is the limit, not 250cc.

\r\n Makes no sense. In CA to ride on the streets legally, assuming bike emissions allow for street use, your plate, driver license and registration (plus insurance) all need to match a CA mailing address. If you have SD plates and SD address, then you have at least 2 vehicle violations. And if your bike hasn\'t been registered to a CA legal street address, it can be towed, at the discretion on CHP.\r\n

you have missed the single point of this thread, which is in the title of the thread:
    \r\n
\r\nto attain a street legal title, and tag, for dirt bikes.
    \r\n
\r\nthe point is NOT how to decifer state by state regulations, lighting requirements, insurance issues, speeding, helmet laws, tire depths, tire types, chain guards, gloves, shield types, helmet hawks, sunglasses, earbuds, or brake lights.
    \r\n
\r\nit\'s just to get a street legal title, and tag. that\'s all.\r\n

I would take a stab at $1,500 to $2,500 for a real cream puff. I\'m in California so every thing on CL is overpriced, especially bobbers and naked bikes. Just keep in mind you only get one try at this so don\'t go and dick it up trying to save 2 bucks in taxes. What did you actually pay for it? Shave a few bucks off that sum. I paid KBB for my KTM and felt guilty as sin declaring that number. Here it\'ll get kick out if it is a stupid number and go to review. Not quite sure how it would play out in SD, but, as I said why chance it?

    \r\nGood luck, and wheelie on.\r\n

My question is did you buy your bike in California? I don't want to have my VIN already come up as a green sticker OHV because I bought it in Cali.

I bought mine in Oregon but it doesn't matter. You can start with a California bike and it works the same, once you plate it in another state it becomes an out of state bike. I have 3 friends that started with California bikes ( 2 wrs and a rmz ) and it worked for them
