quickest motard on the track?

OK so I've been using my DRZ400SM for the track days and I know I need something alot faster but not as much maintenance as an Aprilia!

So the Honda 450's are blowing by me on wheelies exiting turns

the bigger motards like KTM's don't pass me since they're riding skills just aren't there. There aren't many motardr's in my area - geographic issue I guess. Maybe 6 of us on the track

So I haven't been able to measure up to anyone else but these really awesome guys on Honda 450's.

What about KTM610, 520, Husky, Yamaha?

I know the Aprilia has nightmare stories so I'm just no interested in that mfger, I don't mind maintenance but this company sounds like they have some major design flaws.

So how do the 5,6,& 7 hundreds compare to this honda 450 I guess is my real question??? :hmmm:

the Aprilia nightmare is not true , you have been reading about the 550 not the 450 , none of my 450's have ever had a single problem .
after doing the british championships the bikes where shipped to australia and now doing there series , so thats 2 complete championships and the engine are yet to be opened { apart from fitting VDB cams}
my practice bike is standard apart from a shock kit ,triple clamps and 16.5 front wheel , it makes a CRF with 60 hp at the rear wheel and every other mod you can think of, look silly as far as lap times go . you cant say its the rider either as after 4 laps on my aprilia he was a second faster than on his CRF . CRF now sold Aprilia SXV450 on the way :clap::clap:

go for the SXV450 you will be amazed just how good these things are :rofl::rofl:

Depends on the track. The tight cart tracks I race the 450 singles are king. Light, agile and quick out of the corner. The longer more flowing the track the more the advantage swings back to the Aprilla's and larger displacement bikes.

I'm in Fort Worth

I ride Motorsport Ranch (2 parts, 1 tight & 1 not ), Texas World Speedway (haven't run yet but going to run 16/38 by sprocketspecialists.com, Oak Hill (Kart - tight and awesome ), waiting for Eagles Canyon to open (not too technical), Grand Sport Speedway (too damn far).

you?

i havent gotten lucky enough to make it out to the track, but in the canyons, my 450 destroys
i have a friend with a ktm620 on anything thats more opean i can keep up with him, just not able to pass, in the nasty tight roads, i havent found anything that can even try to keep up

my 2cents, the SXV's are insaine i want one, but 10g's and no plate is alot of dough, one day, ive seen a few on the road near where i live and id like to ride with one of them, to see how it compaires to my 450

I got a crf ,with 62hp , the downside is maintence I have to rebuild the cylinder head every 10 hours, but when your racing nationals it's a mute point ,if you want reliability buy a ktm 560 , 50+hp stock and you can probably get a year out of it. keep in mind a crf,yz,kx,etc where designed as dirt bikes you know brapp, brapp through the jump's not wfo all time . To make serious hp with a crf it's headwork, headwork, cam, springkit, crank, blahh blahh the upside is when they're fresh it's scary fun ......I'd almost stick with your yellow banana you can't blow'em up . Oh yeah the faster you want to go the more it costs period ...

goto the first post.
see the little triangle icon in the upper right of the post? thats the 'report post' button.

click it.
type a little message saying 'this person accidently posted this in the wrong section, could you please move it?'

then forget about it.
it'll send a message to a moderator or admin, and they can take care of it... then you dont have to post about it in the thread... ;)

anyway back on topic...

for street and track, i really like the WR450.... or for sheer terrifying fun, CR500. LOL.

hey knightrider, i work with WWW.LSTD.COM and i hear that next year, there should be quite a few more tarders on the scene, including my self. I'm not going BIG but am going SM.

TWS is gonna be tough to do on your bike, I followed behind a YX450F and he was hitting a decent speed on the straight, i was tucked in behind him at 127 mph according to my 636 speedo. not quite enough on the straight but, after the transition, he was gone.

One thing you might try is more appropriate track gearing for your DRZ. I raced mine with 14/44 gearing. 16/38 is way too long for an SM track. From my experience, a 450 is the quickest way around a typical US SM/kart track. A 250 F might be even better. Power doesn't rule around these tracks IMO, at least until you are at the sharp end of the Pro class.

I wish I had more track choices but all the racing where I am is car tracks.

I was thinking the 16/38 for the World Speedway. Maybe it'll mess me up since there are 13 turns

The quickest tard for the track is a loaded question with many variables, the most important one being the rider.

After that would be the bike, how it's set up, and then the type of track.

A KTM SMR is the easiest way to get started as it's a turn key bike, and has good HP and handling, once the suspension is dialed in.

I have a terrific time at Streets of Willow on my KTM 525 SMR, and have a lot of fun zapping sport bikers in the tighter sections.

The 610 is heavier and has a large oil capacity for a single!

The manual says 2.1 US qts, but I wound up putting in about 2.25 qts, that's the most oil I've ever put in a single cylinder 4 stroke bike!

And that's a good thing too, since it was designed as a street machine and can easily do freeway runs without sounding like it's going to explode, like smaller displacement singles do at 75 mph!

OK i'm making huge progress :)

I narrowed my choices down to a Husky 450 or 510. so far it looks like the only differences are the stroke..................

My local dealer has a 07 450 leftover for 6200 and will take my 06 DRZ trade in. sounds like a great deal but if they make the 510, why not?! the 08 450's and 510 will be fuel injected and 8K - too rich for me

Ive got a 2000 s Drz 400 with 440big bore kit, hot cams, jet kit, yosh titainium pipe, 3X3 mod with heavy ass CBR 600 f3 wheels that i ride at a local kart track. I dont even have the FCR carb on it and i can hold my own against Husky 510s, 450s and a crf450. I had a chance to ride the Crf450 this weekend, it really wasnt much faster then my drz, thats seat of the pants feeling. When we are dicing i am keeping up with it. im running 13-39 gearing and my pipe is corked up as was the Crf450. If you want reliabilty stick with the drz, yes they are heavier by are bullet proof and with the right mods can be just as fast with the right rider. The drz has way more torque than most othe 450 bikes & you can ride it on the street. If i get some spoke sumo wheels i will probably drop at least 15lbs which will help in hp to weight ratio. im thinking about getting the 470 stoker kit ill be up to 50hp no problem.

Knightrider, have you seen this? this should be a great Motard track..

Okay, below was Steve's first attempt at a track day announcement and judging by the e-mails I have received it was woefully lacking in pertinent information. Grand Sport Speedway is located just south of Houston in Dickinson Texas. The track is a 1.3 mile road course that has two decent straights and a few tight sections much like Oak Hill. The track is slated to be a 2.5 mile track in the near future but for now the 1.3 mile course is the only ready to ride. The track is totally flat and butter smooth with lots of run off. There is plenty of uncovered paddock space and a nice new riders lounge and bathrooms that should be completed by the 18th. There is no electricity, covered garages, or food service so keep all of that in mind when planning to attend. Camping is allowed on Saturday night before the event and we plan on having a cookout so come join us if you can. Below are links to the sign up page and GrandSport Speedway's web site.
Thanks,
LSTD

* NEW EVENT: Sunday, Nov. 18th @ GrandSport Speedway *
Track Day Benefiting Alberto Rostro

Chances are you’ve seen him at the gate! Alberto is one of our Gate Control folks who work to keep our operations running safely and smoothly. Alberto is a true motorcycle enthusiast and while driving home from our Sept. event at TWS he was involved in a serious automobile accident with trailer in tow. Alberto sustained major injuries and was life-flighted to Hermann Hospital where he underwent 3 surgeries and stayed for two months. Alberto has accrued substantial hospital bills and we are trying to help him in his time of need.

Our final event of this season is at a new track (Grand Sport Speedway) and it will be benefiting Alberto. We will run our traditional 3 group format. Beginner-C, intermediate-B, and advanced-A. Available in each group will be free instruction and we are hoping that you will take advantage of this opportunity and donate in Albertos name in lieu of our usual $50.00 LSTD School fee. You will also be able to obtain your CMRA Racing license and we look forward to holding an event at a new facility. Gates will open Saturday evening and camping will be allowed.

Stay tuned to more info and it becomes available. Thanks for riding with us.

Wade, Jeff and Steve
