First digit is the country or origin
J=Japan Z=Italy W=Germany 1 and 4=US Canada=2 Mexico=3
Second digit is the manufacturer
H=Honda Y=Yamaha S=Suzuki K=Kawasaki D=Ducati
The third digit represents the vehicle type or manufacturing division. Can be pretty much anything
The 4th to 8th digits identify everything from the body style, engine type, to model, series etc. Also the braking and restraint systems for cars
The 9th digit is a VIN accuracy check digit which verifies the previous VIN numbers. It is determined by carrying out a mathematical computation developed by the DOT.
The 10th digit identifies the model year
The 11th digit identifies assembly plant
The 12th to 17th digits are the actual serial number of the vehicle—these last 6 digits make the vehicle unique (think of DNA). It can also help to identify whether the vehicle was the first, the hundredth, or the last vehicle off the manufacturer’s assembly line. This is what can make a car or bike worth more or less to collectors
