    Default SB26's GP85 KTM Build.

Ok guys, now that i finished up the DESmini project its time to get down to business!

Most have already seen what im working with but just incase you haven't, here is what im starting with. Its a 2005 KTM 85SX. It came with a few extra bits (Breaking waves front and rear, Billet KTM gas cap, and V3 reeds).

I have ordered a LOT of parts to finish this build and to be ready to race. Ill post the parts as they come in to keep the suspense.

It was an extravaganza finding fork and shock springs for the 85 SX. I ended up taking to the very nice people at Cannon Race Craft. Bonny REALLY took care of me in getting the right* springs for my bike. Took some research but was great that they had odd ball springs in-stock* for my bike. They ARE the go to for springs. The new rear (orange) spring is installed on the shock. Im going to take my forks, springs, shock to my good friend Todd at TTR to fine tune and set up my suspension.

Here is my 2.15" X 12" Front and 2.5" X 12" Rear Cyclone wheels. Crazy story, i ended up knowing the owner of Cyclone (locally) though a friend... small world.

Next i was on the hunt for 12" spoke kit. The obvious is Buchanans for spokes. But i wanted some trick nipples . So i found out that RAD MFG sells billet aluminum nipples that fit Buchanan spokes. Buchanan spokes for the KTM 85SX are about $200 front and rear! I dont know why people dont buy from RAD MFG but they have the deal! They sell and STOCK KTM 85 12" spoke kits for $140! They come with the trickiest spoke wrench ever too! The spokes are off to the powder coaters.

Lastly for today i got my KTM 450 bar clamps. They bolt right on to the 85 to run fat bars. I have some REALLY cool bars coming my way .

I have my frame, swing-arm, sub-frame, triple set, foot pegs, spokes, hubs, side covers, bar clamp, and a few other bits at ShadRack Power Coating.

A shameless plug--- Shad is the BEST and CHEAPEST powder coater in Central Florida. When i mean best he truly is. I have had A LOT of parts powder coated all over FL, Shad had the best turn around (about 1-2 days), he clears the parts, throughly blasts the parts, great deals and stocks tons of powder. He dose a lot of innovative multi colors as well. If you need ANYTHING powder coated contact him at http://shadrackpowdercoat.com/ .

More very soon.... some good stuff

    Some more parts arrived today.

I got my KTM Cycra ProBend Supermoto hand guards. I also got some KTM Grips and doughnuts. And lastly my carbon fiber bars! Very nice Now before anyone post that the bars are not a good idea (breakage) they are aluminum bars that are wrapped in carbon fiber. I believe they are 30% stronger and slightly lighter than a standard aluminum fat bar. Ether way there pretty trick!

I should have everything back from powder coating by the end of the week and ready to assemble! Moo haha!

Yes, to my knowledge Driven is the only company who makes them. I got the mini bend and is perfect. I was not aware of a "SuperMoto" bend, but they have super cross.

Almost the same shape as my Renthal mini fat bars, i liked the bend on those, so i should feel right at home.

Who let this guy (Carbon B) on.....

Well i made some serious progress today.

Once again i have to thank ShadRack powder coating for hooking it up once again. He did some really innovative 2 tone black/orange on some of my parts. Came out great!

My silicone hoses came in. Much needed...

Laced up my wheels. I think they came out pretty sick if i may add.

Any lastly i finished up making my Carbon Fiber frame guards. They look so good i may need to make covers for them

Much more to come, and a lot more custom carbon fiber as well.

Well i finished up some more carbon parts (much more to come).
    Here is my Fork Guards.

    Brake line holder.

Well i was pretty board tonight so i put the bike all back together. Just need to mount my tires, instal my chain, oil, rad fluid, and she should be up and running. Speaking of running i got my motor back together and cleaned up. Just waiting on my Graves catch can, safety wire some part and were ready to race.

Busy day. I got the bike almost finished up. Suspension feels solid, I was kinda worried about it being too soft, but it feels good. Just need to have it fine tuned.

So i went to put on the chain..... *1* link too short! What the HELL! No one in Orlando has anything longer than a 120L 428.... So i ordered new Vortex sprockets. I wanted to change them eventually, but i had to bite the bullet....

Just waiting on my catch can, few more carbon parts and numbers and were ready to race!

    BING BA DA DING DING!

Thanks, id say under $2500, maybe closer to 2K. I have A LOT of hard work into this bike. It helps being a "do it yourselfer" and having friends / being in the industry. It would cost a lot more for the average Joe.

Oh i forgot to mention, (I feel as im the only person on earth with a SX85 on 12"s), in order to run 12"s on a 85SX you have to cut off the inside chain guard mount on the swing-arm... :( I wasn't to happy about that but it had to be done....

Thanks, i did give it some* thought. It wouldn't be easy and id have to have custom springs made and make some billet spacers to shorten the length in the forks. Id have to say, it feels really good though. Most likely going to keep the hight the way it is.

    Thanks man^.

Well i got all of the parts (just in time) for the FL SM race this weekend. I did pretty well considering id rode the bike around my neighborhood for 5 min right before i took it to the track.

Here is my Graves catch can. These things are really nice. Fits perfect between my swing arm and worked good.

My vortex cat 5 sprocket came in time too. Sense i couldn't run my chain guide i made my self a carbon fiber shark fin.

Here are some practice pics. Id have to say the Bridgstone's ROCK! The grip very well. First time for on/off road and i had a blast.

    Small update.

I received my SXS CDI. I wasnt expecting much of a difference as i have a stock expansion chamber and jetting. But it was well worth the purchase! I can really notice a difference. Cant wait to do some jetting and a new expansion chamber to really wake it up.

BTW, if your in the market for the SXS CDI make sure the part # starts with SXS (if its still there). Otherwise its a stock CDI.

I also ordered some new number graphics! I wanted the look of the AMA RedBull Supermoto plates, but unless your a AMA Supermoto rider you cant get them. I just asked if the could so something like it with out the RedBull (played out). I cant believe he put the AMA logo on there.... I guess i lucked out!

    Thanks,

Yep, the fender (450SMR) is bigger than id like, its actually 4" shorter than the stock 85sx fender. KTM dose not make a smaller SM fender. Eventually ill cut it down and make a carbon fiber fender.

Well its been a little while. Here are some updates.

Iv been working on my carbon air box lit for a while. Finally finished it up.

    Looks fancy!

    Installed.

Sense im unable to use my chain guard slider (rear wheel is too wide for it) my chain guard/slider bracket was just there with nothing attached to it. So i made up a Shark guard for it. Looks better and hopefully it will save my fingers (if need be).

I was having a problem at the track with my front end felling like it wanted to flop in turns. I can only assume that is because i wen from a 17" front wheel to a 12" front wheel. Regardless of the cause a much needed dampener will fix it. Ok well here is where it gets hairy...... So iv had a WER steering dampener for a while now. I bought it from a guy who said he had WER do a "custom" install as WER dose not specifically* make on for a 85SX. He sent me pics of the "install" and i was not impressed. So..... i made some changes. Here gos...

The Original WER bracket was made for the 125s and up. There fender holes are wider front to back. So they drilled new holes. Originally they had the dampener in the front number plate and they hacked it to hell. I wanted a cleaner look so when i wanted to design my bracket i made it about a 1/2" longer. I also have wanted to make a structural carbon fiber plate. So this was a good application. The Carbon plate i made is 6 layers of pressurized 20* oz Carbon fiber. Its the same thickness of the original aluminum plate. The original plate weights 4.1 oz and the new plate weights 2.1 oz. My plate is bigger and has more surface area. I was not expecting to save any weight, really just an excuse to flex some carbon skillz....

Next issue was the dampening rod bracket. WER just welded a plate to the frame. One i just powder coated my frame. 2 i could make some thing better. So i fabbed up a removable bracket that attaches to the radiator mount and steering stop mount. Worked great.

WER mount on top. My mount on bottom (sorry for the splatter welds, ran out of gas).

    Mounted. Top view.

    Bottom view.

    Rod mounted.

Next i mounted the WER rotary dampener to my CF bracket. Sorry its a WER dampener not a KTM... Just a sticker... Just did some light* trimming on the number plate for the rod to travel through.

    Installed.

    Works like a charm....

Oh while i was in the KTM mood i made my self a KTM iphone case! Muhahaha!

    Enjoy....

Very nice. If I can get our 125 sold I'll be building another 85 (Honda though!) and will be looking to your source for those B'stones!

Might I suggest a black gas tank? I know they make them for the KTMs. If you can build or buy some carbon fiber shrouds, that would look SICK!

    Thanks!

The Black tanks dose look better but they are very rare and very expensive as EVERYONE wants one. The orange tank is functional these bike are well know for guzzling gas and the Orange tanks are transparent. Its kinda nice to always know when your riding how much gas you have. i do think eventually ill go with a black one when i come across a good deal.

Carbon should have always been on my mind, just to busy with business carbon jobs and products to make stuff for myself. Ill eventually get to them.

Next is a Brembo 125+ caliper/master, 105 kit and an a FMF expansion chamber.

Ok ok.... If you have ever rode/raced a KTM 85SX you know there pretty good base for sumo racing.... except the front brake. Its pure garbage! I changed my stock set up awhile back to Glafer pads, 5.1 fluid and a Breaking Wave rotor. I still got brake fade. The stock caliper is just too small. So i kicked around the idea of making a bracket to run the Brembo caliper found on most KTMs 125cc and up. But it just wasnt going to cut it. KTM makes a sumo big brake kit for my bike ..... but for 16/17" wheels. So it got my wheels turning..... how can i make it work.

I bit the bullet, found a good deal on a new rotor and brake adaptor. Found a KTM 450 Brembo.. Made some spacers to off set the rotor, milled the caliper bracket to pull away from the wheel, and trimmed the back of the caliper.

The brakes are INSANE now! Well worth the money.

    Boo ya!
