I am anxious to Buy my Suzuki DRZ 400SM. I am riding a Gixxer 750 right now but it keeps getting me in trouble. I keep reading that this DRZ 400SM is a heavy pig, its too expensive, and i will be disapointed :hammer:
I want a Street Legal SM with electric start, headlight, tailight, blinkers, tag holder etc. I will be riding on many mountain roads and back roads. I am still considering waiting one more year for honda or someone to make a Factory Street Legal SM.
Is the DRZ really a bad buy in this case? :headshake :headscrat :headscrat

sorry to hijack, but why do gsxr riders find it necessary to write gixer with two or even three x's (eg. gixxxer). Is this the number of crashes or something? :hammer:

Shit man, if you think moving over to a moto is gonna stop you from getting into trouble, you're dreaming! It's a lot easier to do stupid stuff on the SM than it is on a regular sportbike....the SM just asks for it. Riding in areas you shouldn't be riding, jumping off of stuff, in addition to the wheelies and speeding and whatever else is already getting you into trouble on the gix.

You may want to rethink your motives! ;)

I think that's a good rationale ... its one reason I got my DRZ SM, out on the road its a lot harder to do mega warp speeds that will get you thrown in gaol real quick. Probably more smaller tickets, but no 250kph ones :D

WWW.GIXXER.COM Thats why :hammer: :FU: Everyone i know spells it Gixxer or GSXR. not Gixer. :headscrat :hmmm: I am not worried about catchin a ticket for something small and fun. But i will NOT go to jail for anything over 100 MPH! Out where I live its a mandatory 5 days in jail for anything 100mph + and Can be a max of 60 days!!. I live in the 2nd Highest average household income county in the nation so the Police here are diccks! But I have found myslef some local stunt areas with nothing around but pavement. So its the power and the speed thats gets you into trouble. No reason to Own a Crotch Rocket and not use the power
Supermoto is for me anyways. I kill it on Dirt bikes. Thanks for the reply's!

I wonder how bad Full Coverage is on a SM? I pay $1200 a year for liability and comprehensive only on y Gixxer! No Full Coverage! Full coverage was 4500+ a year. Im 24 but was 23 at the time with a bad driving record but awesome Credit history. My buddy over at Geico says Insurance rates are based off of Credit too!!
What do you all pay?

around $100 a year, full coverage for the DRZ400 in CA that is now an SM. Of course, I am almost 40, but the smaller displacement, and lack of bodywork should make for a huge difference for you.

As for the comment regarding who knew about stoppies on sidewalks...what is the verdict? that was too funny, but it explains SM to a "T".

The goat trails we ride in the SC mountains, you never see a cop. If there are no cops, you don't get tickets.

Besides, I have more fun going 30MPH through a corner that would cause a sportbike pilot to shit his pants at 20 than I ever did going fast on a sportbike.

hmmm...I've had nothing but the opposite experience. I was always 'clean' on my ZX-6R (the last road-legal sportbike I owned), and only got one speeding ticket (+15kmh) in four years of streetriding various sportbikes. But the only time I went >200kmh was on the way to school (everyday) because the back-road up to campus was desolate. Other than that, I got all my kicks on the track, so I guess I never really felt tempted to get it out of my system on public roads.

But since I've had the moto, it's been an entirely different story! I've only ridden the thing on the road maybe 5(?) times (I bought it mainly for trackdays and dirtriding) and I've been pulled over three of those times. Seriously, it's like any excuse you have to do something stupid...you're gonna try to do something stupid. I guess I'm more worried about the small things, rather than big ticket items because that's never really been a problem.

And as for insurance, I paid about $400(?) for the year...but that was only liability coverage. Collision insurance is pointless, it more than doubles the premium, but the moto is pretty cheap to fix and pretty hard to wreck. :D Theft insurance is probably a good idea, but again it's expensive...and I don't ride the SM anywhere, it just stays in my garage unless I take it to a trackday where it's under my constant supervision.
Wait a minute, why the hell am I paying insurance for something I never ride!?!?! :headshake

I pay ~$300 a year for full coverage and low deductibles. I've got descent credit, descent record, married and 26. One of the larger variables in an insurance quote is displacment, so Motards should be reletively low unless your goin the 600+ route.

well, i rode my superhawk for the first time yesterday since i got my husky 450r, and it felt reeeeeaaaally slooooowwww. Not to mention how much easier it is to wheelie or do whatever else you wana do on a supermoto. I think you'll be happy with just about any sm you go with

Thanks for all the good reply's

Supermoto will be my Route to a longer lasting life  :Funny: :laughingr

The DRZ is a lot of fun on a cart track.
Mind you, I also have a CRF, and they feels worlds apart, but if you do not have a bike to compare back to back, the DRZ is perfectly fine.
Good tires, and you will NOT be hurting for traction, and you will be scraping pegs.
Stoppies and wheelies pretty much anytime you could want, especially on a kart track.
Unless you are racing, you will not need anything else...I am convinced of that.
Of course, I do have the FCR and exhaust which totally transformed the character of the bike, and I mean like a complete makeover (extreme home makeover) type of transformation!

Get a Husqvarna SMR. My dealer installs 'factory' street legal kits sold by Fast by Ferracci and sells the bikes plated and ready to go. The street legal kit costs a couple hundred but right now you can find big incentives on leftover 2004 bikes. I'll let you know more about the kit when I pick up my bike next week.
